An Evening of Sacred Songs and Celebration: Kirtan and Raga with RagaBhakti
Saturday, March 30 • 7:30–9:30 p.m.
Finding a sense of grounding and stillness is at the heart of joyful, ecstatic chanting. How does silence weave its way through sound? The RagaBhakti Kirtan ensemble celebrates the essence of Sanskrit chants based on ragas (melodies that reflect a particular mood or emotion), incorporating the essence of the rich heritage of Indian music with western genres. Brief periods of meditation offer the opportunity to pause between each chant. Sample tracks: soundcloud.com/ragabhakti

RagaBhakti is an ensemble led by Yogi Shridhare, a Boston-based vocalist and musician who was raised in a temple in India, where he was trained in classical Indian music. For the past ten years, he’s been leading kirtans around the U.S. and in India, including Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health. About his CD “Silence Dancing,” Jai Uttal has said, “It’s a lovely and heart-filled album. All the touches of Indian classical music are a joy to hear. And Yogi’s voice is so pure and gentle.”
