Yoga for Arthritis Certification Course

The Yoga for Arthritis Certification Course is offered for teachers who have completed the Yoga for Arthritis Teachers Intensive course and have a total of 40 hours of experience with students in this field and related work or study.* In this course, participants will learn about advancements in the field of Yoga research as it pertains to arthritis, as well as developments in the recommended management of arthritis. We will also expand on material covered in the Teachers Intensive and present emerging concepts and opportunities available for returning teachers. Participants will have an opportunity to learn from one another to hone their skills.

Successful completion leads to a three-year designation as a certified Yoga for Arthritis teacher. Yoga for Arthritis (YFA) is member school of the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). YFA programs count as modules and/or transfer credits for some grandparenting and 800-hour Yoga therapy programs. These credits may also count as IAYT continuing education at some point in the future. Please contact YFA or your yoga therapy school with questions regarding YFA credit and its role in your current yoga therapy training.

  • Yoga for Arthritis Level I
  • A minimum of 40 hours of experience in the field, including:
    —At least 25 hours of teaching (groups or one-on-one) or assistant-teaching that can include up to five hours observing the teaching of students with arthritis and related conditions by certified Yoga for Arthritis or pre-approved teachers.
    —Up to 15 of the 40 hours can involve establishing clinical relationships and/or a case study.
  • Any/all of these experiential hours may be in the form of mentored practicum. Please contact Yoga For Arthritis directly with any questions about this option.

Teacher Bios

Dr. Steffany MoonazDr. Steffany Moonaz received her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training at Yogaville in 2003 and followed it with a 500-hour program in Yoga Therapy at yama studios in Baltimore, Maryland. Through her doctoral studies at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, she worked to develop and evaluate a Yoga program specifically for the arthritis population. Dr. Moonaz is a current faculty member at the Maryland University of Integrative Health, teaching in Masters of Science in Yoga Therapy program. As an athlete and dancer, she has always wanted to bring the gift of joyful movement to persons with chronic pain.
Integral Yoga Institute offers 500 hours of training in two segments, 200 hours and 300 hours, permitting teachers who graduate to become either an RYT 200 or an RYT 500, depending on the level of training completed.
