Yoga for Arthritis Level I Teacher Training Online

June 10 – 27, 2021

Taught by Nancy O’Brien, C-IAYT, RYT-500, Elizabeth (Livvie) Mann, RYT-500, and Sunaya Peter Karow, C-IAYT

As more and more people of all ages turn to Yoga for medical conditions such as arthritis and chronic pain, Yoga teachers want to equip themselves with the knowledge and experience to teach safely. With our training now completely virtual, it is more accessible than ever to learn to effectively and safely impart the evidence-informed Yoga for Arthritis practices and modifications to those who need the empowerment, peace and hope of therapeutic Yoga.

Yoga for Arthritis was developed by an interdisciplinary team of medical and healing professionals, combining ancient Yoga practices with the latest research and medical knowledge. In a seven-year randomized clinical trial at Johns Hopkins, program participation was associated with mitigated arthritis symptoms, disease biomarkers, physical fitness, psychological functioning, and quality of life.

The ever-growing Yoga for Arthritis community provides lifelong support, information, mentoring and inspiration to those who complete Level 1. This training, as well as all of the advanced YFA trainings, fulfills International Association of Yoga Therapy and Yoga Alliance continuing education credit requirements.

Participants receive a certificate of completion and access to extensive resources in an online community devoted to Yoga for Arthritis Level 1 graduates. They are eligible to continue to Level 2 (mentored practicum) and from there to the Level 3 Certification Course. At the end of Level 1, program participants will:

  • Understand the basics of autoimmune and mechanical joint disease
  • Be able to offer asana modifications for those with joint challenges and pain
  • Understand how arthritis impacts all the koshas and how to manage the effects
  • Teach Yoga for Arthritis classes in their communities
  • Work individually with clients of all ability levels
  • Be able to work one-on-one with YFA mentors, many of whom work in hospitals and various other medical settings and who also participate in the high-quality research and advocacy.

Teacher Bios

Nancy O’Brien, C-IAYT, RYT-500, a certified Yoga therapist, focuses in all ways on Yoga and meditation for arthritis and chronic pain, Parkinson’s, Lyme disease, and other illnesses; restorative and therapeutic Yoga for individuals and groups; Yoga for elders; and mind-body wellness and prevention programming. Continuing on her own healing journey after a nearly fatal illness, she shares Integral Yoga’s vision of making Yoga a sustainable component of health care and hails its dharma as a respected leader in the field of therapeutic Yoga. To that end Nancy is coordinator of IYINY’s Yoga Therapy programming, trains registered Yoga teachers in Yoga for Arthritis, was an adviser on the Arthritis Foundation’s Arthritis-Friendly Yoga video, and teaches in hospitals and community centers. Advocating always for patient-centered care that works toward creating a healing relationship, she has written about integrative medicine and health issues for Yoga Journal, Yoga Journal online, and the International Association of Yoga Therapists’ magazine Yoga Therapy Today. Elizabeth (Livvie) Mann, RYT-500, certified Yoga for Arthritis teacher trainer, took her first Yoga class (at Integral) many years ago and hasn’t looked back. Since then she has been working toward deepening her own meditation and yoga experience and, in the past decade, the experience of her students. She is particularly interested in the role of Yoga in wellness and health care for individuals and in institutional settings. Helping create and run Integral Yoga Institute’s one-of-a-kind drop-in Yoga for Arthritis program, now in its seventh year, has been an ongoing privilege and pleasure. She is committed to making the benefits of Yoga accessible to everyone, regardless of age and challenges. In addition to Yoga for Arthritis, she is certified to teach Hatha Levels I and II, Restorative, Prenatal, Gentle, and Yin Yoga.

Sunaya Peter Karow, C-IAYT, RYT 200, a longtime practitioner of Yoga and meditation, is certified to teach Level I Integral Yoga classes. In addition, he is a licensed physical therapist and health care administrator who has worked in the health care industry for many years. Program Review

Yoga for Arthritis Training Report, written by Nancy O’Brien
With a long-held dream to become “the Dean Ornish of arthritis” and seven years of rigorous research under her belt, Steffany Haaz, Ph.D., RYT 500, convened her first Yoga for Arthritis Teacher Training Intensive in 2010. The foundation of this teacher training intensive was the sixteen-class, eight-week Yoga for Arthritis series: the protocol used during seven years of research conducted at Johns Hopkins University. The intensive entitles the participants, upon successful completion, to use these sixteen sequential classes to teach this series, using a manual that covers the material contained in those classes.
