    Renata Sumar Gaertner, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, RCYT, has been practicing and teaching Yoga to children and adults for over 25 years. She is the daughter of Sonia Sumar, who developed the Yoga for the Special Child Method®. From an early age, Renata saw the impact Yoga had on her sister, Roberta, who had Down Syndrome. At the age of 12, Renata completed her first Hatha Yoga Training Program through Brazil’s Federal University at Minas Gerais (UFMG) and began teaching Yoga at the age of 15. She continued her studies at UFMG and received a diploma in speech therapy where she completed her thesis “Yoga as a Method of Global Stimulation for Children with Down Syndrome”.  After having the opportunity to meet Swami Satchidananda, she decided to spend several months living at the Integral Yoga Ashram in Virginia to further her studies in Yoga under his guidance. Renata is currently the Director of the Integral Yoga Center in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and is Co-Director and Teacher Trainer of the Yoga for the Special Child® Method. She is a member of the Integral Yoga Teachers Association, International Association of Yoga Therapists, and Yoga Alliance, where she is a registered experienced Yoga teacher, E-RYT 500, E-RCYT, and Certified Yoga Therapist.

    Sonia Sivakami Sumar

    Sonia Sumar (Sivakami) is internationally known for her pioneering work using Yoga therapy with special children. Her innovative techniques and methods have been improving the lives of children with special needs for over 40 years. She owned and directed Yoga centers in Brazil and Chicago, where she has achieved remarkable results working with children and adults. She currently travels extensively, conducting workshops and professional training programs for Yoga teachers and other professionals throughout the world. She is author of the book Yoga for the Special Child®, which has been published in several languages.

Yoga for the Special Child 95-Hour Certification Program is a comprehensive training that provides the essential tools for working with children who have special needs. Using hands-on instruction, our teachers guide program participants through each stage of the special child’s development.  Courses are taught by internationally renowned Yoga therapist and author Sonia Sivakami Sumar, (along with her daughter, Renata Sumar Gaertner), whose innovative teaching methods have been improving the lives of children and adults with special needs for almost 50 years.

Yoga for the Special Child is ideal for Yoga teachers, educators, parents, caregivers, occupational therapists, physical and speech therapists, nurses, and anyone interested in teaching Yoga to children with special needs.

Part 2 (55 Hours) Developing Programs for Teens and Young Adults

This course further expands on the techniques learned in Part 1 with special emphasis on working with teens and young adults, but also refining your skills to work with kids from 0-12 years.

In this course you will:

  • Discuss theory and practice of working with older students 13 and above
  • Describe physiological and psychological benefits of Yoga for older children
  • Learn challenges and solutions for working with adolescents and teens
  • Learn criteria and structure of group classes
  • Have opportunity for feedback and guidance on specific case studies
  • Review the four stages of development and receive feedback regarding the videos each student recorded working with a child with Special Needs using Yoga for the Special Child – The Sonia Sumar Method
 
Note: Participants are expected to have had some experience teaching at least 2 hours of Yoga for the Special Child ® (i.e. 4 half-hour classes). Participants will bring at least one video of one of these half-hour sessions/classes to the course for feedback.  (Video must be compatible with Windows Media Player or Quick time). A video of any student of any age is acceptable but a session with an older child is encouraged.

About Yoga for the Special Child 95-Hour Certification:
 

After successful completion of the 95-Hour Certification Program (Part 1 and 2), participants will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment for the program.

After Part 1 and 2, you will be able to teach Yoga classes to children of all ages using the Sonia Sumar Method.  You will also eligible to apply for Yoga for the Special Child Practitioner Licence, which means that you will be able to use the title “Yoga for the Special Child Practitioner”, use the logo of Yoga for the Special Child and have your contact details listed on the main website.

Yoga for the Special Child 95-Hour Certification, Part 1 and 2 comprehensive teacher training satisfies the 95 contact hours for Yoga Alliance RCYT (Registered Children’s Yoga Teacher). Please note: you must complete both courses to have the combined 95 contact hours for the Yoga Alliance. Please refer to Yoga Alliance for additional information on the requirement to obtain RCYT certification.

Yoga Alliance Hours:

95 hours with completion of both Parts 1 and 2.

 

YOGA FOR THE SPECIAL CHILD® 95H CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Who Should Attend

Yoga for the Special Child® is ideal for parents, caregivers, yoga teachers, educators,
occupational, physical, and speech therapists, nurses, or anyone interested in teaching yoga to children with special needs.

Accreditation

At the end of the course you will receive a Certificate that is recognized by Yoga Alliance US and Yoga Alliance UK. Once you receive this certificate you can officially start teaching yoga to children with special needs from 0 to 12 years old. If you decide to do that Privately you will need insurance and valid up to date CRB ( this is only applicable/ needed in UK, other countries may have different rules and regulations. )

You will be also able to apply for Yoga for the Special Child Practitioner Licence which means that you will be able to use the title “Yoga for the Special Child Practitioner”, use the logo of Yoga for the Special Child and also have your contact details listed on the main website. This is a great way of generating clients as the website is worldwide recognized and has a huge number of visitors. It will also connect you to the rest of the Yoga for the Special Child family from all around the world. It is an extensive network of fantastic dedicated yoga therapy practitioners that offers a great support and connection.
