Program Description

March 2 – April 6  •  Thursdays, 9:00–11:00 a.m.

The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali present the foundational teachings of Raja Yoga, the path of meditation leading to self-realization. A spiritual text dating from antiquity, the Yoga Sutras is a timeless classic bestowing universal teachings on the nature of the mind, consciousness, and the essence of the inner Self. This living wisdom has been passed down through millennia, providing a wealth of knowledge which we can apply today in our own search for fulfillment, lasting happiness, and peace.

Offering a complete manual for the study and practice of Yoga, Patañjali’s Yoga Sutras cover specific techniques and their results, obstacles on the path and how to overcome them, culminating in the ultimate aim of Yoga. In this course, we will explore a curated selection of key sutras, unpacking their meaning and discussing ideas for how we might incorporate these gems of wisdom into our own daily experience. Following Patañjali’s eight-limbed path, the original Ashtanga Yoga, we will discover a clearly detailed map leading us towards personal transformation and spiritual awakening.

Suitable for beginners who may be opening the Yoga Sutras for the very first time, this course will dive deep into the philosophy of Yoga so that even more advanced students will find new insights revealed upon further study. Along with an exploration of traditional commentary on the original text, there will be time for discussion, questions, and suggestions for practical applications.

The recommended reading for this course is The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, translation and commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda, available from the Integral Yoga shop. There will be suggested reading from this text between classes as preparation for the next session. While the reading is not required for participation, it is meant to enrich your understanding of the material and enhance your experience within the class discussions.

Participants can apply up to 12 contact hours of Continuing Education for Yoga Alliance.

All proceeds from this course will support the scholarship fund for Integral Yoga 200-Hour Teacher Training.
